Phantom Assemblies Back to Productivity Tips History Page
Phantom Assemblies are Bills of Material that are not normally manufactured in their own right but are used to simplify creation and maintenance of other (parent) Bills of Material. For example, if you have (say) 100 end products whose BOM includes the same 20 components then it is simpler to create a single Phantom Assembly that contains these common components. In each of the Parent BOM you would add the Phantom as a 'sub assembly' rather than the individual 20 components. When generating an Assembly Order or running MRP the routine will 'blow through' the Phantom 'sub-assembly' and replace it with the 20 components. Ostendo facilitates the creation of Phantom Assemblies and uses them during Material Requirements Planning and Assembly Order creation. Ostendo will also allow you to create an Assembly Order for the Phantom Assembly itself. This feature is useful in instances where you would 'blow through' the Phantom during normal assembly manufacture of the Parent Assembly but also manufacture the Phantom in its own right as a sellable Spare. An example of this would be Engine Gaskets. For Assembly-Line purposes the gaskets would be issued independently to the line-side station where they are used. However, they could also be sold as a 'Kit of Gaskets' through the Spares Department. Ostendo also includes the added functionality whereby you can use Phantoms within Phantoms if required. This will assist your employees to improve productivity in both sales and operations. Ostendo® adds advanced inventory, job costing, manufacturing, service and distribution to your accounting system.
